PyroCluster Fire Text with Cinema 4D Tutorial

In this tutorial I go over how to use the preset – TP Surface Emitter, using the PyroCluster. I used this technique on text, but the technique will apply to using thinking particles to emit from any polygonal object. I also touch on using groups for your different particle systems.

Soft Body Tag Text tutorial

In this video I discuss how to prepare the text mesh for Soft Body Tag dynamics.

When I couldn’t get the caps to stick to the body of the text, I came up with this:

Cinema 4D depth of field tutorial

In this tutorial I briefly cover how to achieve the depth of field effect within Cinema 4D and with a depth pass layer in After Effects.
Special thanks to Bob Cahill for his input regarding the the problems with DOF rendering in C4D with PyroCluster, some transparancies, and hair.

iPhone Ad campaign for class project

In my Layout 2 class, we were tasked to come up with an ad campaign for a product, I chose the iPhone.
The target for this is a 46″ x 30″ poster at 150dpi. I wanted to try to crank the settings in C4D to see if it helps at all, so in addition to the global illumination, ambient occlusion, I also boosted the anti-aliasing to 4×4 minimum and 16×16 max under ‘Best’. I wanted this be to as high quality as possible, but discovered the time hit it takes to add this much anti-aliasing isn’t worth it, it took 25.5 hrs to render! It was an obscene number of pixels also. I added a depth of field in C4D.
Here is a smaller version of what I came up with.

Here is another one that was targeted to 88″ x 30″ at 150dpi. This had a higher poly count and more reflections to slow the render, but I used lower settings in the anti-aliasing, global illumination & ambient occlusion. This render took “only” 6 and a half hours.

ZBrush To Cinema 4D text experiment

This is an example of what I have been working on this week.  Using Cinema 4D to create the text shape then bring into ZBrush, then back to C4D for environment creation and output. I used the C4D plug-in called XBreaker to shatter some cubes. I am considering creating a tutorial about how I made this. I’m pretty much a noob with ZBrush but have been able to get some really interesting, unique results.

Here was another experiment with the same work flow. The poly count for this is out of control (a million and a half polygons, actually:). This one image took about 7 minutes to render, it would be quite a commitment to animate anything like this.

Sphere Text Word Explosion Tutorial

Here is my first tutorial. See the original YouTube Clip.
I apologize for the terrible quality of any motion in this video, which is due to the codec I used to capture. I have now upgraded to Camtasia screen capture software, it’s promising to serve me much, much better.
Please feel free to post any questions or comments regarding this video.

Cinema 4D R12

Although there is much to be excited about with C4D R12, I feel a bit let down. I was hoping they would expand the particle/fluid systems to be more competitive with Maya.  I think the soft body thing is neat, but as of right now the best way in C4D to work fluid systems is with RealFlow, which from all accounts is very, very tricky to use.
Maybe I’ll be more excited as people start to demonstrate the new capabilities, but I’ve watched all of Maxon’s videos on Youtube regarding R12 and am a bit underwhelmed.
Mostly, I think there is so much more I need to learn as of R11.5, and I can’t afford to be buying it right now anyways, even with Student Discount.

*Ok, so I may be able to be convinced to buy the student discount from Studica, under $500!  Wow! What a great deal!

Here is a video highlighting some of the new Dynamics:

Umfeld

To this day, I still think about the Umfeld show that featured Jochem Paap (Speedy J) working 5.1 surround audio and Scott Pagano working visual magic.
This was one show that really inspired my thinking that visuals and electronic music can work together to create a whole new thing like I’ve never seen before.  I got a few minutes to chat with Scott Pagano, I found out he is a motion graphic artist for his day job.
I still thank my good friend James Patrick to this day for bringing them to town for the Spark Festival.

UNIVERSAL SEARCH: REAL-TIME, PERSONALIZATION, AND SOCIAL

Miguel Salcido Minneapolis

I went to the MIMA event last night at the Nicollet Island Pavilion to hear Miguel Salcido discuss the new developments in SEO. It reinforced first my enthusiasm for creating awesome motion graphics since I found out that Video SEO is 53x more likely to drive a first page results than traditional SEO and also that my enthusiasm for this blog format as opposed to the old outdated static web page is more likely to make me rich and famous:)

Here are the notes from the event: Google Personalized Search and Universal Search_FINAL – I downloaded the PDF from here.
I will post the video here when MIMA makes it available.

Thank you MIMA and Miguel!
